Tezzeret’s Assessment: October 2026 Banned & Restricted Update

Another banned and restricted announcement has arrived, and this time Wizards of the Coast has decided to leave most formats alone. A wise decision, considering that not every powerful card needs to be dismantled simply because players have found a way to use it effectively.

The October 12 announcement brings no changes to Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, or traditional Brawl. Competitive Brawl, however, is receiving a few adjustments.

Let’s take a closer look at what has changed.

Most Formats Remain Untouched

Standard has become more diverse following the bans in August. Decks like Mono-Green Landfall and Izzet Spellementals are still performing well, but other strategies, including Jund Sacrifice, have started finding their place in the format.

This is exactly what I prefer to see. Players adapting their decks rather than relying on the same combinations every game.

With Reality Fracture introducing additional cards and strategies, Wizards has decided to give the format more time before making further changes.

For now, there is no reason to interfere with a machine that appears to be functioning properly.

Competitive Brawl Gets Some Adjustments

Competitive Brawl is where things become more interesting.

Three commanders have been banned from leading decks:

These commanders have proven difficult to deal with, particularly when their abilities allow players to build consistent strategies around them.

Wizards has also adjusted the restrictions on nine other cards. Rather than keeping them completely banned, they can now be included in the 99 but cannot be used as commanders.

Those cards include:

Personally, I find this approach more interesting than removing the cards entirely. A powerful card can still serve a purpose without having an entire deck built around it.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the card itself, but how consistently a player can access it.

Nashi, Illusion Gadgeteer Gets Adjusted (MTG Arena)

One of the more unusual changes involves Nashi, Illusion Gadgeteer.

Instead of banning the card, Wizards has removed its flash ability in Competitive Brawl.

This changes when Nashi can be played and gives opponents a better opportunity to respond.

It’s a relatively small adjustment, but sometimes that’s all a machine needs. Replacing a single component can be more effective than dismantling the entire creation.

Whether this adjustment is enough will depend on how players adapt.

What Does This Mean for Players?

For most MTG players, this announcement won’t change much. If you’re playing Standard, Modern, Pioneer, or Commander, there isn’t anything new you need to remove from your decks because of this announcement.

Competitive Brawl players, on the other hand, may need to make some changes.

What I find interesting is how Wizards is approaching the format. Rather than simply banning every problematic card, they’re making adjustments that allow some cards to remain playable in different roles.

I’ve always believed that the strength of a deck comes from how well its cards work together. A single powerful card can certainly help, but the right combination of cards is what makes a deck difficult to overcome.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a fairly quiet banned and restricted announcement, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Wizards appears satisfied with how most formats are performing, while Competitive Brawl receives a few changes intended to create more variety.

The next banned and restricted announcement is scheduled for November 30, 2026, giving players several weeks to experiment with their decks and see what strategies emerge.

As for me, I would rather see players find creative ways to overcome powerful decks than watch every troublesome card disappear.

After all, there’s little satisfaction in defeating an opponent who has already been stripped of their most useful tools.
