Mark Rosewater Teases Star Trek

As it is with tradition, every set that is released, Rosewater teases us with limited information about the upcoming set.

Magic: The Gathering Star Trek is set to release on November 13 with spoilers officially beginning next week, October 19. MTG: Edge of Eternities marked the first in-universe sci-fi/space set to include spaceships/stations. As a Trekkie, it was the closest to perfection the game had to offer us until now.

Not only did I collect all the full and extended art for EoE (my binder was too small for the full set), but with Star Trek I prepared to go full throttle, buying extra sleeves and a 2400-card binder to fit the full set of cards in. That is not including the precons I intend on playing.

Enough of that, what kind of spoilers does Rosewater have to share that sound fun?

Well, rather than going through the full list he gave us (you can find it all here), there is a few that stand out to me that spark my curiosity. For the sake of this article, ill stick with one of each section.

Four cards with the word “twice” in its rules text

While we know nothing about this, I can only assume that, considering there are four Commander precons available, this card mechanic might be included within each deck. However, this also does not mean there is only four “twice” abilities.

For example, a previously leaked spoiler Dr. Beverly Crusher, has a “twice” ability yet does not contain that specific word. This could mean we will see more than just the four instances. On that note, I am excited to add the beautiful Beverly to my Heliod deck. Not only will this provide great synergy, she was one of the many childhood crushes (no pun intended).

Tap seven untapped Officers you control

This one has me puzzled; what we do know from the spoilers is there will be red officer tokens, and yes I am excited to kill off and sacrifice all my red shirts, but the particular mechanic itself makes me assume it will somehow be related to stationing or an attack ability. Maybe a “Battlestations!” type card?

Tribble Trouble

We also have one of many new creature types. It’s no surprise we will be seeing Tribbles considering how iconic they are to the Star Trek franchise, almost every Star Trek series has one episode where they are included.

They have always been a nuisance to Klingons and I think it would be fun to see this little critters have some sort of anti-Klingon ability.

However, they are faster than a rabbit in heat when it comes to multiplying. Perhaps they may have an ability to multiply tokens or have any number of tribbles within your deck?

If that is the case, this could easily replace Hare Apparent or Rat Colony.

Red Alert!

Among the many card names shared with us, all of which bring back those nerdy memories I would love to discuss, Red Alert stands out to me as a card of curiosity.

By the title this could easily be a new red card, or blue counterspell, or some other non permanent counter ability.

Though what I would love to see at least in the flavor text is a gentle nod to Lt. Malcolm Reed who is known for developing the Reed, erm, I mean Red Alert in the Star Trek Enterprise series.

We will learn more about the set over the next two weeks if these predictions are remotely accurate.

Chances are they are not.

Either way as a Star Trek nerd I’m excited for this sets release!
